Gemini Notebook Expert Intelligence Wants Your Ebooks

Google has announced a new feature called Gemini Notebook Expert Intelligence, which allows users to upload purchased ebooks—specifically those from Google Play Books—directly into its AI-powered notebook environment. Rather than relying on the open web, the search giant pitches this as a way to query "trusted content" you already own, effectively turning your personal digital library into a private database for its LLM.

  • The paid data pipeline: Google is addressing its AI data scarcity issue by encouraging users to voluntarily upload copyrighted, paid-for material they purchased from Google's own storefront.
  • Walled garden integration: Unsurprisingly, the integration heavily prioritises Google Play Books, ensuring your digital reading habits and productivity workflows remain firmly locked within the Google ecosystem.
  • Monetising the summary: While billed as a major efficiency boost, the workflow essentially requires you to buy a book first, then hand it over to Google’s AI to explain what you just paid to read.
